Summer Instructor Profile: Kate N.

Name: Kate Nolan

Where did you grow up: Suburbs of Detroit, Michigan

Where do you live now: Broad Ripple Village in Indianapolis, Indiana

What is your favorite movie: The Hunger Games

What is your favorite book: Merle’s Door: Lessons from a freethinking dog

Do you remember the first place you went hiking and how old were you:
I grew up going to the National Parks with my family. My most memorable childhood trip would have to be my first backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains with my older siblings. I was only 12, the youngest of four and it changed my life.

What is your favorite outdoor recreation activity: I love mountain biking and backpacking equally

What is the best trip you've ever been on: A week long trip to the Havasupai Reservation in the Grand Canyon. It’s the most beautiful place I have been. Blue green water fed from an underground spring rich in calcium and magnesium and five of the most beautiful
waterfalls you’ll ever see.

Where is your favorite place to recreate: Locally, Hoosier National Forest and Deam Wilderness. I spend each spring guiding and coaching in Sedona and Moab and love those areas too.

What is your absolute favorite piece of outdoor gear: Osprey 65 liter backpack

Waterbottle or Hydration Bladders: Hydration Bladder but I always carry two extra Nalgene bottles when I’m guiding

Down or synthetics sleeping bags: Synthetic for me, it’s light and dries quickly

If you were stranded on a deserted island - what three items would you want: Water capture system, r and matches or flint and fishing line

A place you dream of backpacking some day: The Inca Trail

What does it mean to you to recreate with other queer folks: I’m always grateful for those opportunities, it’s great to get outdoors with people who relate to you and understand you. Did I mention it’s so much fun on top of that??!
