Summer Intern Profile: Kate D.

Name: Kate Dimock

Where did you grow up: Endwell, NY

Where do you live now: Endwell, NY

What is your favorite movie: Spirited Away

Favorite book: Eragon series

Do you remember the first place you went hiking and how old you were: I was about 6 years old when my parents took me and my siblings to the Adirondacks.

What is your favorite outdoor recreation activity: Sailing!

What is the best trip you've ever been on: A 5-day canoe trip on Raquette Lake and Long Lake in the Adirondack mountains

Where is your favorite place to recreate: Adirondack Mountains

What is your absolute favorite piece of outdoor gear: The perfect pair of boots

Water bottles or hydration bladders: I do a lot of winter camping and water bladders tend not to work in sub-zero temperatures... Plus nothing beats a hot water bottle in your sleeping bag!

Down or synthetic sleeping bags: Down in the winter and for backpacking trips, synthetic for summer trips and boating trips (I have a tendency to get my gear wet)

If you were stranded on a deserted island- what three items would you want: A satellite phone, a water filter and book on how to build sailboats

A place you dream of backpacking someday: The Pyrenees Mountains/John Muir Trail (couldn't decide)

What does it mean to you to recreate with other queer folks: Wilderness has a tendency of making us realize what matters and what doesn't. Who you are, who you're with, and the connection you share is a lot more important than what people in the world think you should or should not be. It allows us to shed expectations and be the truest version of ourselves.
