Our Founder

Perry Cohen

In 2014 Perry Cohen realized a lifelong dream of combining his love of the outdoors, his commitment to social justice, his own trans & queer identity, and his professional life when he founded The Venture Out Project.

Perry is an alumnus of Outward Bound where he also worked. Perry has extensive wilderness experience, having led multi-day hiking and mountain biking trips in the southeastern US. He is an avid backcountry skier, mountain biker, hiker, runner and river rafter. Perry is a certified WFR and lifeguard and holds AIARE Level 1 (American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education) certification.

Although after 10 years at the helm, Perry has retired as Executive Director, he still leads the occasional trip for The Venture Out Project and helps support our gender and diversity training program.

Perry Cohen is also the Founder and Board Chair of Transhealth, a comprehensive health center that provides primary care, pediatrics, and mental health services for youth and adults.

Prior to founding Venture Out and Transhealth, Perry was on the executive leadership team at C&S Wholesale Grocers, the largest food grocery distributor in the U.S. He served as Head of Leadership Development and Talent Management as well as Vice President of Operations and Logistics. Perry also coached Division I and III college soccer and taught high school history and art. Perry currently serves as board member of The Smithsonian Institution and C&S and is an advisor to Symbotic, a leader in AI and robotics in the logistics sector.

Perry holds a B.A. and M.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania and lives in Western MA. In his free time, Perry is part owner of a small ski hill in New Hampshire and can be found skiing, mountain biking, trail running, surfing, and hanging out with his teenage twins and black lab.
