Queer Ecology Walk - Atlanta, Georgia

Queer Ecology Walk - Atlanta, Georgia

September 7, 2025 — 10:00 am - 12:30 pm ET
Last day to register: September 5, 2025

Let's explore the world of queer ecology on a 1.3-mile walk through a forested wetland in Decatur, Georgia!

Your local TVOP volunteers are partnering up with Andrew Hogan (they/he, @ahogan235), a science communicator with over ten years of experience in environmental and conservation education. Andrew’s goal is to connect people to nature in new and thought-provoking ways and encourage people to explore the world around them.

Learn about non-heteronormative animals, plants that challenge what it means to be a plant, and more! There are so many stories of nature that have been overlooked, cast aside, or ignored that highlight the diversity in the world around us. Queer Ecology is not just gay animals, but a means of understanding that challenges what we've always been taught about nature.

During this walk, we will stop and chat about some backyard examples of Queer Ecology, connect with one another, and enjoy time in nature. Details, including exact location, what to bring, and more will be shared after registration.

A note on accessibility: This walk includes stairs, uneven terrain, and an overall 29 ft elevation change. It is mainly flat. No restrooms on site. Reach out to us for more details as needed!

We ask folks under the age of 18 to please register themselves and an adult to accompany them. This event is queer and trans centered and led and is open to all ages and allies. If you require a service dog to attend, please let us know and we’ll collaborate with you on how to keep you both comfortable and hydrated at the event.

September 20, 2025 — 9:00 am - 1:00 pm ET Rain date: September 21, 2025
Last day to register: September 18, 2025

Join TVOP Volunteer Sam on this iconic ridgeline hike in Easthampton, MA. The many ascents and descents on this hike are sure to get your heart pumping, but the payoff is more than worth it! Our route will take us from the forest to the sky as we follow a craggy traprock ridge offering sweeping western views of Berkshire Mountains, while raptors surf the thermals at eye level. We’ll challenge ourselves on rock scrambles, catch our breath (and eat some snacks) at the many overlooks, and enjoy queer community while taking in the colors of early autumn. After the hike, we’ll reconvene in town for some delicious ice cream—vegan options available!

Accessibility: This 3-mile trail includes ~700 ft of elevation gain and is very steep and rocky. We will hike at the pace of the slowest person and take plenty of breaks. The trail begins by ascending almost 500 ft from the parking area in the first 0.4 mile, followed by smaller but regular ups and downs. Multiple sections along the ridge may require scrambling over steep rock faces, occasionally requiring the use of hands, or navigating tight spaces. There are sections of uneven and loose footing on talus slopes. The trail skirts the edge of basalt cliffs with sheer drop-offs on several occasions. Hiking poles are recommended if you have them. We will reschedule for rain, thunderstorms, or very windy conditions. Registration is limited to 12. More detailed information on our meeting location will be shared with registered participants prior to the event.

COVID SAFETY

Masks are not required at this event. Please be mindful of your own and group safety. If you or anyone in your household are not feeling well, do not participate in this event.

  • Our sliding scale is meant to make our trips and events more accessible for those who have financial barriers. Paying a higher amount allows us to provide more opportunities to others. Paying a smaller amount is recommended for those who would not otherwise be able to afford the estimated value. Please choose an amount that you will be able to pay, but will not hinder your ability to afford food, housing, etc. By paying as much as you can, we are able to serve more of our community members.

    Our sliding scale recommendation:

    - Low: Yearly income $30,000 or under, struggles to meet basic needs

    - Mid (pays estimated value): Yearly income $40,000-$75,000, some expendable income

    - High: Yearly income $80,000-$100,000, comfortable, never struggle with basic needs

Need more examples? We follow the Green Bottle principle. Click here to view and find out where you fall.

Queer Fossil Hunting - New Jersey

July 20, 2025 — 10:00 am - 12:00 pm ET
Last day to register: July 18, 2025

Are you curious about the geology of New Jersey’s streams and brooks? Join TVOP Volunteer Brenna for a morning of wading through a freshwater creek and searching for Cretaceous fossils. The Cretaceous period began about 145 million years ago and ended about 66 million years ago. At that time, New Jersey was submerged by ocean water, and prehistoric animal remains accumulated on the seafloor. Fast forward to present day and brooks and streams eroding the ground have exposed these marine fossil layers. We will move slowly along a 0.4 mile trail to access a babbling brook within a wooded area and wade through the brook while searching for marine fossils. The trail itself is narrow and will require walking in a single-file line, and includes one small wooden bridge which requires one step up and one step down to access. The brook is about 3-4 inches deep with a bottom of solid sediment and some rocks. Shark teeth are very common in this area! All experience levels are welcome on this beginner-friendly outing! Footwear you are comfortable walking in water with is highly recommended. Please let us know if there are ways we can make this event more accessible for you when registering.

We ask folks under the age of 18 to please register themselves and an adult to accompany them.
If you require a service dog to attend, please let us know and we’ll collaborate with you on how to keep you both comfortable and hydrated at this event.

  • Information for our land acknowledgment was gathered from nativeland.ca, which provides an estimate of original indigenous land occupation, but does not take into account migratory patterns or movement of the many surrounding communities. We recognize the historical complexity of indigenous movement across the land, and honor with gratitude the many, many surviving native nations whose land we benefit from in our work to diversify the outdoors.

Last day to register: July 10, 2025

Join The Venture Out Project for our first volunteer-led event in Montana!

This day hike takes us through lush forest to a beautiful waterfall. Once we’re there, we will eat our snacks together and enjoy the stunning views and company. It is a gentle uphill to the waterfall, but we can take lots of breaks along the way for water, breathing, and community building.

This classic hike is enjoyed by many people for a reason, so we will start early at 8am to beat the crowds.

July 10, 2025 — 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm ET
Last day to register: July 8, 2025

Thursday Night Hikes are back! Please join us this summer for some of our favorite hikes in Western Massachusetts, led by Volunteers Amy and Sam.

This week’s Thursday Night Hike is a relaxing walk in the woods along rolling hills, lovely streams, and mossy boulders, with a scenic overlook to the west. Mostly gentle inclines with one steeper, rockier section near the overlook. 3.2 miles, 300 ft elevation change.

About Thursday Night Hikes:

Thursday Night Hikes are all about finding community and relaxing in nature with other queer folks! They are a low-stakes, low-stress way to meet new people while enjoying summer outside. We hike at the pace of the slowest person, and we don’t leave anyone behind.

Hikes range from 1.5 to 3 miles and are generally within a 30- to 40-minute radius of the Northampton/Amherst area. All hikes start at 5:30pm and may go as late as 8:00pm. Hikes generally run rain or shine, but we will cancel for heavy rain, thunderstorms, or extreme heat.
