“While creating my design, “We’ve Always Been Here,” I was inspired by the act of reclamation that queer identity involves. Natural spaces and flowers live inside my cells, brought there during childhood travels with my dad-the-botanist, but when I suffered familial rejection after coming out, it felt like I had to push away all the pieces of my childhood. That is just not true. In brainstorming, developing, and describing my design, I have reclaimed my child-father plant identification and broadened it to share with the queer community and all flower lovers.” -Lauren L.
